Figure notes

Plots exclude states and years with fewer than 20 systems installed. Some variables are not available in all states. Upper-case N's correspond to sample sizes used to determine a specific statistic. Lower-case n's correspond to the number of systems in a specific category. All installed price figures exclude third-party owned systems, systems with battery storage, and self-installed systems.

Data Sources

The trends presented here are based on data collected for Berkeley Lab’s “Tracking the Sun” report. Those data, which consist of records for individual PV systems, are sourced primarily from state agencies, utilities, and other organizations that administer PV incentive programs, renewable energy credit registration systems, or interconnection processes. Berkeley Lab then undertakes various steps to clean and standardize those data, and publishes a public version of the resulting dataset, updated annually. For further details on the underlying data sources and data cleaning processes, please refer to the latest version of the Tracking the Sun report, available at: http://trackingthesun.lbl.gov.

Sample Size

The figure below summarizes the number of records in the Tracking the Sun dataset to the overall U.S. PV market size in each year. Figures presented elsewhere are based on the subset of records for which the relevant data elements are available, and plot summary statistics only if at least 20 records are available. Installed-price figures are based on only host-owned systems, excluding all third-party owned systems. Please refer to the Tracking the Sun report for further explanation of the sample methodology and description of any notable gaps in market coverage for particular states.
The figure describes the combined sample size of residential and non-residential systems, either nationally or for the individual state selected. Total market size is based on data from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, the Solar Energy Industries Association, and the Energy Information Administration

Customer Segment Definitions

Residential includes single-family residences and, depending on the conventions of the data provider, may also include multi-family housing. Small Non-Residential includes all non-residential systems up to 100 kWdc. Large Non-Residential includes non-residential systems larger than 100 kWdc, with no upper size limit for rooftop systems and a cap of 5,000 kWac for ground-mounted systems. Ground-mounted systems larger than 5,000 kWac are considered utility-scale and are addressed separately in Berkeley Lab’s companion Utility-Scale Solar report.
